Layering necklaces is one of my favorite ways to dress up a simple holiday outfit. A plain sweater or black dress suddenly looks finished with two or three chains at different lengths. If you have never tried it, this guide walks you through an easy way to start, with no fancy rules.
Pick a base necklace you would happily wear every day. Something dainty and close to the collarbone works well, because everything else builds from it. If you are not sure where to begin, browse the jBloom necklace collection and choose the one you reach for first.
Metal matters less than you think. Mixing gold and silver tones is very popular right now, and I like it because it works with whatever jewelry you already own.
The trick that makes layering look intentional is spacing. Choose a second necklace that sits about two to four inches lower than the first, so the chains do not tangle or fight each other. A pendant on the longer chain gives the eye a place to land.
According to jBloom, its PermaLinx necklaces come in a standard 19 inch length plus an extended 21 inch oval style, in stainless and gold stainless. That one little length difference is a handy starting point for a layered look.
When I style a layered look, I let one necklace be the star. If your pendant is bold, keep the other chain simple. If both are plain, add a little interest with a pair of earrings from the jBloom earring collection. Balance is what keeps layers from feeling busy.
PermaLinx is jBloom’s permanent jewelry line. Instead of a clasp, a designer fits the piece to you in person and joins it on the spot. jBloom says PermaLinx necklaces start at $75, and bracelets start at $45. Because the piece is sized to you, it sits exactly where you want it, which is great for a base layer you can build around. Prices and options can change, so check the jBloom page before you plan.
Not sure what the appointment is like? I wrote a step-by-step walk-through in What to Expect at a PermaLinx Appointment. And if you want to pair a necklace with a wrist stack, my bracelet stacking guide has simple ideas.
Here are a few combinations I would try this season:
Necklaces make a thoughtful gift for a mom, sister or friend who loves a polished look. A PermaLinx piece is fitted in person, so jBloom says to schedule the appointment ahead of time and ask your designer for a gift certificate. You can also read more on the PermaLinx page or find a designer near you.
Start with one chain, add a second at a different length, and let one piece shine. When you are ready, shop jBloom here or contact me about a PermaLinx appointment. I would love to help you build a look you feel great in this holiday season.
Pricing and availability are per jBloom’s website at the time of writing and may change.
